Plan to completely ban diamond imports from Russia

The New York Times reported that the G7 countries and the European Union are planning to impose a complete ban on importing diamonds from Russia, starting next year.

The United States has imposed a ban on the import of rough diamonds from Russia, as well as stones that were processed in Russia, in 2022, but this ban left room to circumvent the restrictions, according to the newspaper .

The European Union did not impose sanctions on the import of diamonds from Russia previously due to the position of Belgium, which plays an important role in the trade in precious stones in its economy. But now it was possible to bypass the resistance of the countries that were opposed to banning the import of diamonds from Russia.

It is expected that the new sanctions will include imposing a ban on the import of all diamonds from Russia, including those that have been processed in other countries.

The new sanctions are expected to be announced next September, and to enter into force in January 2024.

It is noteworthy that the G7 countries are the largest buyers of Russian diamonds, as their share in diamond purchases is about 70%.
